So is this what getting older is like? Before I would want all the cars and would constantly think about all the cars I see on the street. In the past year or so I still think about other cars but they don’t do much for me aside from a slight 1-day fantasy.

I think about STis, M3s, and M5s but then they just don’t a lot for me anymore. Same with the McLaren Senna and the Ferrari 488 GTB. I was watching the Grand Tour and had a weird moment where I kind of liked the Camaro that May was driving. Then the next day I was looking at them and just realized, “Don’t be silly. You’ll just get bored of this thing in a month.”

As of now and the past few months, the only car that I can envision myself wanting and keeping long term is either a 991.2 GTS or 991.2 GT3. Both with a manual. Either in Sapphire Blue, Voodoo Blue, Metallic Black, or Chalk.

What are your forever cars? I’m not about your talking dream car. I’m talking about a car you would keep regardless of what your mind wanders off to.

I already have one of them. For me this is always going to be my “anything goes” platform to do whatever crazy mods I’m interested in at the moment. LFX swapped, sequential gearbox, with 200 pounds of sound deadening and Lambo doors for the lols after destroying a race track ? Sure. It’s also special to me, because no matter how I abuse it, no matter the weather, it just keeps working! I can always count on this little guy to get me to work in a pinch. As much as I love my Volvos, there’s a reason they’re currently untouched, buried under a foot of snow, and it’s not because I feel like I can rely on them.

Kinja'd!!!

T he other two that I can think of would be a first gen NSX, or a well modded V70R, either 1st gen in green, or 2nd gen in Audi’s Nardo Grey

Well one thing I’ve said with every car I’ve had from 17 to 23 years of age is “I’m gonna keep this forever”. On car #5 and I’ve kept a car no longer than 3 years max. HOWEVER. The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve desired to actually commit to holding onto a car longer (be it financial reasons in or out of my control, or I finally find cars whose honeymoon periods actually last). With the Mustang and 924, I genuinely aim to keep them longer than 3 years (Mustang just has to make it to August to be 3). I ordered the Mustang and it’s exactly what I wanted, and the 924 is a passion project. At this point, it would take a very specific manual 718 Cayman to drop the Mustang, and the 924 is never leaving me.

Yes, getting older is about thinking about what cars you fantasize about.

-pre masturbatory adolescent

The “ cars” I fantasize about “ owning” are ones that have a well rounded rear, firmly established boundaries, and are able to be shifted manually. We’ll see if our therapist can help me hold on to them. I’ve locked down a German-French-English deal which seems to fit the bill.

When I started getting into cars I wanted a Sentra SE-R spec V and I found one and hated it. Then I wanted a WRX and eventually got one of those. I had a chance to buy a STI at a great price and traded up. I had intended on keeping that thing forever but then I fell in love with a 91 NSX. I wanted to keep that one forever but instead lost it in an accident. Then I had a Lexus and it was on paper amazing and I was pleased quite well but I found I missed manuals too much.

Assuming I don't lose everything and go broke.... I hope I can keep my current setup for a really long time. I plan on adding a cheap manual hatchback and a Civic for my wife and that's it. If I can't be happy with this, I can't be happy.

Panamera GTS Sport Turismo and GT3 Touring in Chalk, Graphite Blue or Gray Black.

RS4/6 Avant, in Nardo Gray

E63S AMG wagon, in Lunar Blue

And I plan on keeping my F250 7.3 and running it into the ground (May take a while)

Basically everything I own right now with the exception of the Integra is a forever car. The Integra doesn’t make the cut simply because it’s ‘more of the same’ compared to the Daytona. Any more, I just... don’t see the point in buying cars I don’t plan to keep forever.

There is some stuff I would like to add to the stable still, of course.

Kinja'd!!!

1993 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T. In green. I might accept blue if the right car came along, but, green’s the one I want. And it will only come out to play for very special occasions.

Kinja'd!!!

Lotus Esprit V8 SE or Final Edition. In yellow. It has to be yellow. OK fine I would also accept BRG, but I would very much prefer yellow. And rough enough that I wouldn’t feel bad about taking it to the track.

Kinja'd!!!

Lancer Evolution VII, Dandelion Yellow, factory BBS. Bone. Fucking. Stock. I will daily drive the shit out of it.

Kinja'd!!!

987 Cayman in blue and completely thrashed . To be turned into a true track terror. Probably fit it with a 3.6 twin turbo. This one’s probably never gonna happen though, just because of engine cost.

Kinja'd!!!

GMC Topkick/Kodiak 5500 Toterhome. It would be nice to be able to tow all the cars and just camp at the track. It really would. Just because the tracks are in day-trip distance doesn’t mean I like getting up at 7AM for a 9:30 AM briefing.

I’d love to ideally keep both current cars forever but definitely my clownshoe. That was one of my childhood dream cars and it’ll never get old.

Cars I want and would keep: XK120 (the long term dream car), Hudson Hornet Hollywood (as close to my grandpas as I can find), FB RX7

They’re already in my driveway.

I will likely keep both of my current dailies as long as I am able to keep them alive.

If all goes well I’ll be adding another this weekend.

Beyond those, I would like a clean one of these at some point:

Kinja'd!!!

That’s about it.

Cars I will keep:

2002 E46 M3 Phoenix Yellow

1975 1502 Agave Green

Cars I would eventually obtain and keep:

E39 M5 (in some sort of actual color )

997 (in some sort of actual color) not a rag top and not a targa

Austin Mini Cooper

Cars I will own for while then sell:

Honda S2000

Ferrari 355

Alfa Romeo GTV

I don’t know. I plan on keeping my 996 Cab forever  because of how I got it; I think the only other car that I’d keep forever is a Panamera with a manual transmission; ive heard a handful of them came to the USA and if I could get one without getting gouged I’d hang onto it. But that’s a pipe dream.

The Lotus would be fun but those electrical gremlins may cost you more than the engine cost of the Cayman. The Cayman I do like but I prefer the 981 body style and engine sound. A 981 Cayman GTS would definitely be in my stable if I could get one that has the options I want in a few years. I would want a 981 Cayman GTS with a manual and the x73 sport suspension.

The Evo I used to like but for some reason it has aged horribly in my eyes over the last few years.

LOL You’ve got the right idea here. The “car” I fantasize about “owning” would be a well rounded rear, narrow center region, sophisticated, well maintained, low miles, and is nimble enough to turn on a dime.

Yeah, that sounds like what happens as you get older. Although I don’t think I ever thought, “I am going to keep this car forever. ” They were always cars I got along the way. Now though, I want to get that forever car.

And it’s not even I’m tired of cars. It’s I’m tired of car dealerships. They waste SO MUCH F******G TIME! I know it’s part of the sales tactic but it’s just plain stupid. When I was buying my current car I was literally telling the guy, “I am buying this car and I agree to your price!” and it still took 6 freaking hours. I got VERY irritated and hangry at the end.

Okay you’ll have to explain the minivan because you lost me there.

I grew up when these things were ALL OVER THE PLACE. My aunt and uncle had one in blue. My parents had TWO of the following generation of these as well. My mom had the Dodge Grand Caravan in forest green and my dad had a Plymouth Voyager in maroon.

I think the only true color for an e39 M5 is LeMans Blue. I agree on the 997 but I dislike the center console in them.

As for the s2000 I like them but I can’t imagine owning one. I’ve been in my friend’s Suzuka Blue on blue interior AP1 and it was a fun car but the roof down thing just sucks. You can only ever use it in the spring here. The summer is too hot for it.

You’ve literally written my entire list. Just swap the GT3 touring for a regular GT3 and add in an e39 M5 in Lemans Blue and you’ve got the entire list.

I actually like the ridiculous wing on the back of the GT3. Because it just makes the car more impractical. I have this weird fantasy where I want to use the GT3 for mundane tasks like going to the grocery store, Costco, and buying a Christmas Tree.

I really want to strap a C hristmas tree to the top of a GT3. Maybe even buy a large flatscreen TV with it. The wing would serve as another point to tie the items to.

Not a chance of that. Remember, I was electrical specialty and I’m a system integrator on the side. I don’t even need to break out my DMM half the time.

There’s no chance in hell I’d take a 981 Cayman for a track car though. Electronic steering bullshit. The 987 still has hydraulic power steering. Electronic power steering should be banned, along with any of it’s advocates and designers. And then they should all be shot.

One of the main reasons the Evo gets a spot is because it’s basically impossible to source a CP9A in reasonable condition, and it’s also the lightest and most bonkers of the CT9A’s. It’s actually significantly faster around the track than the Evo VIII, IX, and X and within literal   spitting distance of the GT-R V-Spec and 911 GT3 Cup on some tracks.

I prefer Oxford green on the M5. The S2000 is an itch I just have to scratch at some point . I’ve driven several and been sooooo close to pulling the trigger on two. The first one I bought an STi instead, the second time it was my M3.

Lol now that’s innovative thinking. How is your e39 M5 doing so far? I was actually thinking about getting one a few months after you got yours but chickened out and got a Gran Coupe.

1989-1991 Dodge Caravan ES, 2.5L Turbo, Manual. It’s the only vehicle I’m actively on the hunt for, or it’s counterpart, the 1989-1991 Plymouth Voyager Turbo.

Guess I’m not sure what needs explaining?

The car is doing well. Sadly, I haven’t driven it since November :(

The winters here are brutal and I don’t want to turn the car into a rusty slab of swiss cheese.

The Gran Coupe is a good choice :) I want to drive one, I’m sure its a lot of fun.

It is a fun car. the ZF 8-speed is telepathic and as good as everyone says it is. The BMW tuning is sublime on it. I drove a Jaguar with the same transmission and it left much to be desired with the shifting. That said it does not have that aural and manual pleasure I miss so much now.

It handles the traffic and freeway miles like a bea st though.
